The Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) is the extra amount you pay in addition to your Part B and Part D premium if your income is above a certain limit.[1][2]

The IRMAA applies to Part B and to Part D (for both stand-alone drug plans and for Part C plans with drug plans).

The IRMAA isn’t part of your plan’s premium, for most people this extra amount is taken directly from their Social Security check.

NOTE: Medicare also has cost assistance based on income.
