Doctors fall into two general categories, Primary Care Providers (PCPs) and Specialists. A primary care doctor is a general practitioner of medicine who provides a wide range of diagnoses and treatments, helps coordinate your care, and can refer you to a specialist.[1]

On Medicare plans you will often have different costs for primary doctors and specialists and may need a referral for specialists. Many plans will require you to have one Primary doctor who can help coordinate your care.
